Gardening Teacher


Terms Of Employment 

9.5 months/approximately 171 days per year. Part-time, $14 an hour. No benefits.


Primary Purpose
provide students with developmentally appropriate high quality engaging learning activities on gardening and nature-based lessons. Develop long-term projects focusing on the local environment. Coordinate garden maintenance for school breaks and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated competency in sustainable gardening and lesson planning

  • Experience teaching to diverse age groups ranging from Pre-K 3 - 8th grade.

  • Candidate must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee

  • Ability to work in a Cooperative school environment with significant parental involvement

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification and training (e.g. college degree) or equivalent experience

  • Knowledge of permaculture practices

Major Responsibilities And Duties
  • Introduce the children to different gardening techniques, plants, and nature activities.

  • Create age appropriate lesson plans to include: planting gardens, maintaining gardens, learning about different plants and herbs, learning about nature.

  • Develop outdoor spaces (any garden beds, Just Love Garden, area between the driveway and the main building or any other area designated by the board are reserved classroom space for the Gardening Class. The space and materials or products should be treated with the same consideration as a normal classroom when planning improvements or workdays).

  • Any irrigation, rain barrels, compost tumblers, or bins and hoses, or nozzles will be maintained will be by the gardening teacher and any contents therein will be reserved for use in the garden

  • Greenhouses and tool shed and any contents therein are reserved for the garden class and will be maintained by the garden teacher

  • Fruit trees on campus should be maintained with recommendations from a certified arborist

  • Coordinate maintenance of Birdbaths and feeders

  • Work with classroom teachers to integrate lesson plans and communicate with B&G on maintenance or drainage issues.

  • Gardening classes are 30-45 minutes session per class

  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly to students, parents and staff

  • Responsible for determining supplies needed, assist with purchasing, and track supply need and use.

  • Participate in staff development activities that improve job-related skills & professional growth

  • Compile, maintain and file all reports, records and other required documents

  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings once a month

  • Attendance and punctuality at work are essential functions of the job.

  • Non-graded school; no standardized testing

  • Participate actively in documentation for gardening process and accomplishments including online journals, photographs

The Circle School is a private, non-profit, family cooperative preschool and elementary school.  We provide small classes, individual attention, and a program that emphasizes teaching peace and a knowledge of world cultures.  We are located at 217 Pershing Ave., San Antonio, Texas (south of Hildebrand between Broadway & N. New Braunfels, near the Witte Museum).
